What we do
We support children with developmental delays and disabilities to excel in their unique abilities.
We Support
Local Facilities
The Nahum Samson Memorial Foundation supports effective treatment plan implementation by local early intervention and rehabilitation service providers. The treatments are implemented based on the children’s unique qualities to determine the best course of action.
We Support Special Education Programs
The Nahum Samson Memorial Foundation supports implementation of quality inclusive education in Ethiopia’s school system for children with developmental delays and disabilities.
We Raise Awareness and Understanding
The Nahum Samson Memorial Foundation works with local service providers to raise awareness about developmental delays and disabilities.
There is a high level of stigma and parental blame towards parents of children with developmental disorders and this can mean that children with developmental disorders often remain isolated at home. Most of these children do not attend school and they receive no formal support. In addition, their parents are unable to work to care for them at home.
What we care for
Awareness
Support awareness raising work by local facilities and community-based rehabilitation organizations by creating flyers and brochures that teaches the public about the causes and risk factors of developmental delays and disabilities to prevent misconceptions, stigma and social exclusion.
We facilitate trainings to parents of children with developmental delays and disabilities as they learn how to help their children grow and learn. Parents’ own increased awareness about developmental disorders changes their reaction to others’ negative attitudes and stigma.
Acceptance
Creating a more inclusive Ethiopia for children with developmental delays and disabilities. We believe that increasing understanding and acceptance is crucial to empowering children with developmental disorders and creating more inclusive community.
A Bright Future
Support implementation of timely screening, early interventions and rehabilitation services by local facilities and health centers.
The treatments that we support generally include:
- Speech and language therapy: to enhance communication skills.
- Occupational therapy: to enhance fine motor skills needed for daily living such as dressing, eating and bathing.
- Physical therapy: to enhance physical capabilities, including walking, jumping.
- Behavior therapy: to minimize and correct negative behaviors such as throwing tantrums or hitting others.
